GTA VI Is Now Rated in Australia and New Zealand: What R18 and R18+ Actually Say

New Zealand's classification board has now listed GTA VI with a full descriptor string, and Australia's rating has climbed a tier above GTA V. Here is the confirmed record, and the line between a rating and a scene list.

The rating picture for Grand Theft Auto VI is now complete enough to read across three major boards, and New Zealand has become the clearest one to check.

The Film and Video Labelling Body of New Zealand, the country's classification authority for games, has listed GTA VI under the title Grand Theft Auto VI with Rockstar North as the named developer. The entry carries an R18 classification, and the published descriptor string is the full adult set: Graphic violence, drug use, offensive language, sex scenes and nudity.

That is a primary-source record, not a paraphrase. It is the classification body's own listing, and it confirms what the game has been rated rather than what a reporter believes it will contain.

Australia adds the second data point, and it is the more interesting one for anyone tracking how this release compares to the last.

GTA VI has been rated R18+ in Australia, a tier above the MA15+ rating that Grand Theft Auto V carried. Australian classification rules put R18+ at the top of the restricted scale for games, meaning the title is legally restricted to adults. The descriptors attached to the Australian listing point at strong violence and strong adult content. That is a real shift for the series in that market, and it is worth stating plainly: Rockstar's newest game has been classified more restrictively down under than its predecessor was.

One caveat belongs here. An earlier wave of coverage reported an X18+ listing for GTA VI in Australia, with some outlets treating it as settled. X18+ is a different and far more restrictive category that applies to sexually explicit content, and reporting at the time described that listing as very likely a filing error rather than a final classification. The R18+ record is the rating that stands. Treat the X18+ talk as a data-entry episode that was corrected, not as a confirmed higher rating.

The larger board, the ESRB, has already moved. Rockstar's own GTA VI store pages carry the Mature 17+ mark from the Entertainment Software Rating Board, with the same broad descriptor set that has appeared on the series for years. Across the three boards, the message is consistent: this is an adults-only, unsoftened release in every market that has ruled on it.

Here is the boundary that keeps getting crossed. A rating is not a content reveal.

A descriptor string such as sex scenes and nudity tells you that adult material exists in the game and that a board reviewed the submitted build. It does not name a mission, a character, a mechanic, or a story beat. It does not confirm that any specific scene fans are arguing about is real. It says the finished product contains adult content in general terms, and nothing more specific than that.

None of the three boards has published a full written rating summary for GTA VI yet. When the ESRB posts its longer summary, and when the Australian and New Zealand boards attach their detailed reports, those documents usually include a short paragraph describing representative content. That paragraph is the point where a general rating starts to say something concrete, and it is the document to watch if you want more than the label.

So what changes for players today? Very little about the game, and a fair amount about the record.

A game gets a rating once a build is far enough along for a board to review it. Three major boards have now done that. It is a normal step in the final run to launch, not a marketing beat, and it lands in the same window as preorders and storefront metadata coming together ahead of the November 19, 2026 release.

The confirmed facts are these. GTA VI is rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB, R18+ in Australia, and R18 in New Zealand. The Australian rating is a tier above GTA V's. No board has published its detailed summary. The adult content is real and officially recorded; the specifics are not.

What is still open: the PC release has no announced date or separate rating, Trailer 3 has not been scheduled, the online mode's launch shape remains unconfirmed, and there is no official detail on how any of the mature content is handled in the finished game. Those stay in the open column, waiting on Rockstar or a board to say more.

If you want to track what has actually been confirmed against what is still rumor, the three ratings now sit on the confirmed side of the ledger. Everything past the label is still a guess until someone publishes the report.
