GTA VI Map Size: What Rockstar Has Actually Verified About Leonida

Rockstar has confirmed Leonida is roughly three times Red Dead Redemption 2 and about double GTA 5, but there is still no official square-mile figure, district map, or final road layout.

The GTA VI map conversation has a habit of running ahead of the evidence. A number gets quoted in a forum thread, a YouTuber draws an outline over a trailer still, and within a day people are arguing about exact district boundaries for a game that is still two months from release. So it is worth separating the map questions Rockstar has actually answered from the ones fans are still guessing at.

Start with what the studio has put on the record. Rockstar's own site frames the game around Leonida rather than around Vice City alone. Its Only in Leonida section names Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, and describes Vice City as the sun and fun capital of America, with Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market, and the VC Port sitting inside that city pitch. That is official structure. It tells you the setting is a state with a signature city inside it, and it gives six named places to hang reporting on.

Rockstar has also put numbers on scale, and this is the part most people half-remember. In the press cycle around the August 27 Extended Look, the studio told the New York Times and the YouTuber TGG that GTA VI's map is about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area and roughly double the size of GTA 5's. IGN relayed the same figures on August 28, citing those Rockstar comments directly, and design director Rob Nelson made the broader version of the point to IGN, calling it the largest, deepest and most densely populated world the studio has built.

That is a real, sourced scale claim, and it is narrower than it sounds. Rockstar has confirmed a ratio against its own back catalog. It has not published a square-mile figure. It has not released an official map image. It has not given a full region list beyond the places already named, and it has not said how the state is divided into districts. If you see a precise acreage, a leaked coordinate grid, or a finished road map presented as fact, none of that is coming from Rockstar, and the site's own atlas page says as much: the pre-release map is editorial, not a final in-game map.

The other detail worth handling carefully is interiors. The same press round produced a claim that GTA VI has hundreds of accessible interiors. That was reported by TGG and it may well be true, but Rockstar has not stated a number in those terms, so it belongs in the reported column rather than the confirmed one. It matters because interior access is the lever that turns raw surface area into something you can actually explore. A state twice the size of GTA 5 with almost nothing to walk into would be a lot of scenery. Hundreds of enterable buildings would make the same land feel considerably denser.

Which brings up the mistake people keep making about size. Bigger is not automatically better, and Rockstar's own history shows both outcomes. A sprawling map with thin roads, few interiors, and side activity clustered in a handful of zones can feel emptier than a smaller world where every neighborhood has texture and a reason to get out of the car. The size figure is a statement about surface area. It is not a statement about density, pacing, or how much there is to do in any given square mile, and nothing Rockstar has said resolves that.

The two places worth studying for a sense of that density are the ones Rockstar has already shown. The Grassrivers and the Keys are the clearest examples in the official material, and they read as an attempt to build the state as more than a single city with countryside attached. Wetland and marsh terrain, bridges, and small island settlements are the kind of geography that lives or dies on what is placed inside it. If those regions are mostly scenery between two cities, the landmass figure will not save them, and if they are full of activities, they will carry a lot of the game's sense of place. That question is still open, and no size comparison answers it.

What the official record does not support is just as useful to know. There is no confirmed square-mile total for Leonida. There is no district map. There is no final road layout, no leaked coordinate set, and no region breakdown beyond the six named places. The relative comparison against RDR2 and GTA 5 is the one scale claim with a real source behind it, and it is still a comparison, not a measurement.

It also helps to remember how the pre-release map has been built in public. Every trailer drop and every screenshot round gets pulled apart for geography, and a lot of what circulates as map knowledge is really inference layered on top of inference. Someone lines up a bridge from one frame against a coastline from another, and the result gets repeated until it sounds settled. Rockstar has been careful about this on purpose. The studio has shown Leonida in pieces, through a named-places page and a gallery of stills, rather than through the top-down map image that would end the debate. That is a deliberate choice, and it means the honest state of map knowledge right now is a set of confirmed places, one sourced size ratio, and a large amount of fan interpretation that has not been confirmed or denied.

That gap is not a problem to fix. It is simply where the game is in its marketing timeline. Once Rockstar publishes a proper map, the arguments change shape but they do not stop, because the interesting question was never really acreage. It is whether the space is worth spending time in, whether the towns have distinct character, whether the roads reward a long drive, and whether the wilderness between the cities has a reason to exist. Rockstar has answered a size question and left those ones open, and readers are better served by knowing exactly which is which.

If you want to read the map for yourself rather than take a number from a comment thread, the useful sources are the ones the studio controls. The Only in Leonida page is where the named places come from. The official screenshot gallery is where the visual evidence lives: stills show atmosphere, art direction, and specific locations, and they do not confirm mission structure, map scale, or Online systems. The site's own atlas is the place to see how the confirmed places and the interpreted ones are labeled side by side, with the source ladder attached to each marker. It is worth treating the atlas as a reading aid rather than a finished map, because that is exactly what the evidence supports today: named places you can trust and a scale ratio you can quote, sitting alongside the parts of Leonida Rockstar has not described yet.

None of this moves the parts of the calendar that matter. The release date is November 19, 2026, the two editions are the Standard at $79.99 and the Ultimate at $99.99, and the announced platforms are the ones Rockstar has listed. Map speculation does not change any of that, and a bigger Leonida does not mean a different date.

The short version for the next time a map-size claim crosses your feed: named places and the RDR2 and GTA 5 ratio are sourced. A precise acreage, a district map, and a leaked coordinate grid are not. Treat the first as a reasonable basis for conversation and the second as someone filling a gap that Rockstar has deliberately left open.
