A Hacker Opened the PS5 Debug Menu on the Firmware GTA VI May Need

A prominent PS5 hacker showed the debug menu open on firmware 14.10, the version GTA VI is reported to require. That is a real crack. It is not a working GTA VI pirate copy, and the people closest to the exploit say so.

A well-known PS5 hacker who goes by Gezine posted a short clip this week showing the console's debug settings menu open on firmware 14.10, the current system software. The clip is the claim. There is no public exploit, no released tool, and no playable GTA VI running off it.

That sequence matters, because most of the coverage today reads the demo as the start of GTA VI piracy. It is not. Here is what the people actually doing the work are saying, and what would have to change before any of this touches November 19.

What Gezine showed is access to the debug menu. Getting that menu open on current firmware implies a working kernel-level exploit, which is genuinely notable. Sony has spent the last two years closing the doors hackers were using, and 14.10 was one of the closed ones until this week.

But a kernel exploit gets you into the console. It does not get you a game. Modern PS5 titles have to be decrypted and dumped before anyone can run a backup copy, and on firmware 14.00 and above that requires a separate, working hypervisor bypass. The community's previous method for that, Byepervisor Reborn, was patched out by Sony in recent updates. Gezine's own words on the limits are blunt: the old way of dumping executables does not work at 14.xx.

So the honest scoreboard reads like this. Confirmed by the demo: someone can reach the PS5 debug menu on 14.10. Not confirmed, not demonstrated, and not close: any ability to dump or run GTA VI. Gezine is keeping the exploit files private, and there is a practical reason for that. Releasing it now would almost certainly push Sony to ship a mandatory firmware update before launch, and Rockstar could attach a higher firmware requirement to the GTA VI day-one patch. The exploit that looks like a threat today is worth more to the scene unpatched than spent.

There is also a question nobody outside Sony can answer yet: which firmware GTA VI will actually demand. In early October, a wave of reports said the game would require 14.10. Those reports were attributed to a firmware check, not to a Sony or Rockstar statement, and neither company has confirmed the number. It is the kind of detail that gets repeated until it sounds official.

It is worth being clear about why this story lands so hard right now. GTA VI is the first Rockstar release of the all-digital era for PlayStation, with no disc to fall back on, and it arrives a month from now on hardware that is already hard to buy and selling above sticker. A cracked console firmware hits differently when the game is the biggest launch of the decade and every copy is tied to an account and a download.

The reasonable read, for now: Sony has a problem it is actively paying to solve. PlayStation recently paid a $50,000 bounty through HackerOne for a significant undisclosed bug, which is the behavior of a company closing holes rather than one that has already lost. GTA VI launching on a jailbroken firmware is possible in the abstract. GTA VI being pirated on launch day is not a thing anyone has shown, and the people closest to the exploit are saying so.

We will keep tracking this one. The signal to watch is whether Gezine releases the exploit before November 19, and whether Sony pushes a 14.20 update ahead of the day-one patch. Everything else is the same story told louder.
