The PS5 Pro Is Selling Out, and GTA VI Is Only Part of Why

Retail stock is thin, resale prices are hundreds over MSRP, and a new report says Sony's PS5 Pro shortage will not ease until 2027. Here is what is confirmed before GTA VI lands on November 19.

If you have been trying to buy a PS5 Pro this month, you already know the answer, and it is not a good one. Sony's high-end console is out of stock at most major retailers, resale listings are running hundreds of dollars over the already-inflated sticker price, and a new report says the shortage is not about to ease.

That report comes from the German outlet Playfront, which says Sony has told its distribution partners that "temporary market supply constraints and high demand" will keep retailer stock thin until at least 2027. Engadget picked it up on October 11 and framed the crunch the way a lot of fans are feeling it: more power, better visuals, and still no PC release date for GTA VI, which together keep pushing people toward the most expensive PlayStation on the shelf.

Let us be precise about what is actually confirmed here and what is not. Confirmed: GTA VI launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that date has not moved. Confirmed: the PS5 Pro has been selling out and repricing upward for weeks, a pattern multiple outlets and price trackers have documented since GTA VI preorders opened. Reported, not confirmed by Sony directly: the claim that supply constraints stretch into 2027. That line traces to a partner communication Playfront says it obtained, and Sony has not put it on the record. Treat it as credible reporting with attribution, not as a Sony statement.

The numbers behind the squeeze are not subtle. The PS5 Pro launched in November 2024 at $699.99. Depending on the retailer and region, its street price now sits roughly $200 above that, and UK tracking showed the console climbing from about £649.99 in early June to £789.00 by early September, a jump of around 21 percent. When the base hardware and the premium hardware both drift up at once, the machine that plays the game best becomes the one hardest to justify.

Then there is the resale layer. Store restocks are short and unpredictable, so opportunists fill the gap. One Best Buy marketplace listing cited by Engadget had a PS5 Pro priced at $1,539, more than double MSRP. Sony has already responded in one market: in Japan it moved to a lottery system for the high-end console, adding purchase conditions meant to filter out resellers. That is not a company calmly managing demand. That is a company admitting it cannot just stock the shelves.

Here is the part that should temper the rush. Calling GTA VI "PS5 Pro Enhanced" is a label Sony uses for games with improved visuals and performance, and it is not a promise about what you will actually see. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has said how GTA VI differs on the Pro. Earlier this year, rumors of 60fps support on the Pro circulated, but Rockstar has publicly stuck to 30fps targets, and the official preview footage we have seen was played on a standard PS5 at 30fps. The Pro's 10 percent CPU gain may help with crowds and traffic, but scale is a CPU problem, and that is exactly where the Pro's advantage is thinnest.

None of this means the Pro is pointless. Its ray tracing improvements and image upscaling are real, and for players chasing the best-looking version of the biggest game of the decade, they will matter. It means the gap between the Pro and a standard PS5 may be narrower than the price gap suggests, and that paying resale markup of several hundred dollars for that gap is a bad trade most people will regret.

The practical read for anyone still deciding: buy from official storefronts, ignore steep resale premiums, and do not treat a stock outage as any kind of signal about the game itself. Rockstar has not tied the launch to hardware availability in any way. The console is scarce. The game is not moving. Those are two separate facts, and only one of them should change your plans.

One note on the wider pattern, because it is the same story on the other console. In September we reported that every new Xbox Series X model was out of stock on Microsoft's own store. Two months out from launch, both premium consoles are either unavailable or overpriced depending on where you look. That is the pre-launch hardware market in late 2026, and it is worth planning around rather than reacting to later.

Source note: This article is built on Engadget's October 11, 2026 report, which cites the German outlet Playfront on Sony's supply guidance to distribution partners and on PS5 Pro resale pricing, and on UK price-tracking figures reported earlier. Rockstar and Take-Two have confirmed the November 19, 2026 launch date and the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms. Sony has not made an on-the-record statement about PS5 Pro supply continuing into 2027, and no supply timeline should be treated as established. Next Vice has not verified individual retailer stock or resale listings.
